I grew up on a small dairy farm in Sonoma County, surrounded by the lush greenery of meadows and hills—a true plant paradise. My dear grandmother, Mary Egitkhanoff, lived nearby, and she knew her plants inside and out. She used to tell us that it was her belief in God and her deep knowledge of plants that saved her life—a lesson she meant in every sense, as she and my grandfather were survivors of the Armenian genocide. It was her sacred duty, as she saw it, to teach us about God…and plants. And that wisdom, especially about the plants, has stayed with me ever since.

I never knew then that I would be called into the service of the green. But as a young woman, during a long, liberating horseback journey from my parents’ backyard to the Trinity Alps, the plants began to speak to me. Riding every day, cooking wild greens on a tiny pan, and savoring nature’s simple bounty made me feel more alive than ever. When I returned home that fall, I knew I was meant to give back to the earth. In 1972, with the help of some great friends, and especially Drake Sadler, I opened Rosemary’s Garden, a little apothecary in the back of the Guerneville Natural Food store.
